About Narrator

Most people own more to read than they have time to sit down with — a manuscript to review, a technical PDF, a novel that has been on the shelf for a couple of years. Reading time is scarce. Walking, commuting and washing-up time is not.

Audiobooks cover some of that, but only for books someone has recorded, and usually only if you buy the book a second time. Your own drafts, out-of-print titles, public-domain classics, fanfiction and work documents have no audio edition and probably never will. Narrator is for those: take the file you already have and listen to it.

A few things follow from that. Files are parsed on the phone rather than uploaded, narration runs on the device so it works offline, and there is no account, because there is nothing to sync.

The free plan narrates 25,000 characters a day — about a chapter — and resets every day. No trial clock, no account.

There is a cap because generating good synthetic speech costs money for every character produced. Without one, the choice would be between losing money on heavy use and switching to much cheaper voices. A daily allowance that resets seemed the better trade: enough to get through a book over a few weeks at no cost, with Plus at $4.99 a month for anyone who would rather not wait.

The numbers are written out across the rest of the site so that nobody has to find them out on day two.

Bug reports, questions and feature requests all go to the same inbox — the support page has the address. It is a one-person project, so replies come from whoever wrote the code, which is usually quick. A report that arrives with the file that caused the problem is the fastest kind to fix.
