What the AI voices sound like
The honest description is “a competent reader” rather than “a performance”. Sentences land where they should, commas get a beat, questions rise at the end, and paragraphs do not run into each other. What you do not get is characterisation — no distinct voices for dialogue, no acting. A professionally narrated Audible edition is a different thing and will stay a different thing.
The bar that matters is whether you can listen for two hours without fatigue, and that is where these voices separate from a screen reader. Adjusting speed and pacing
Playback runs from 0.5x – 3x. In practice most people settle somewhere between 1.1x and 1.5x for fiction, drop back to 1x for anything dense, and use the high end only to skim.
One thing that comes up constantly and deserves a direct answer: playback speed does not change your character budget. The free plan counts characters of text narrated, not time spent listening, so a chapter costs the same at 3x as it does at 0.5x. Listening faster gets you through the book sooner in wall-clock terms; it does not get you more of it per day.
Offline and on-device
Once a book is imported and the voice you picked has been downloaded, narration needs no connection at all. Nothing about your library is uploaded — the file is parsed on the phone and the speech is generated there.
