Narrator support
Email flowing-bytes@proton.me and you will reach the person who builds the app. Most problems are one of five things — a DRM-protected book, a scanned PDF, an unsupported format, a voice that has not downloaded, or the daily character limit. Each is covered below.
Contact
flowing-bytes@proton.me — for bugs, questions, refunds and feature requests alike. There is no ticket system and no bot; messages go straight to the person who builds the app.
To get a useful answer on the first reply, include:
- What you were doing and what happened instead.
- The file that caused it, if a specific book is involved — that is usually enough to reproduce the problem immediately.
- Your iOS version and iPhone model.
- The app version, shown at the bottom of the Settings screen.
Common problems
The book will not import
Check the format first. Narrator reads ePub, MOBI, AZW, AZW3, PDF, DOCX, RTF, TXT. If the file is one of those and it still will not open, the next thing to check is DRM: a book bought from the Kindle store or Apple Books is encrypted, and no app can open it regardless of extension — see below. If the format is right and there is no DRM, the file is usually either very large or malformed, and sending it to the address above is the fastest route to a fix.
A book I bought from Kindle or Apple Books will not open
Those files are DRM-protected: encrypted so that only that vendor’s own app can read them. This is separate from the format — Narrator reads MOBI, AZW and AZW3 perfectly well, so an .azw3 file that is DRM-free will import, while an .azw3 bought from the Kindle store will not. It is a property of the file rather than a limitation of Narrator, and removing the protection breaks the terms you accepted when you bought the book. DRM-free ebooks, personal documents you sent to your Kindle, and public-domain books all work normally.
A PDF imports but reads nothing
It is almost certainly a scan — an image of each page rather than text. Test it by trying to select a word in Preview or Apple Books. If you cannot select it, there is no text for any app to read, and the file needs OCR run over it first.
A voice will not play, or sounds wrong
Voices download the first time they are used, so the first play needs a connection. After that, narration works offline. If a voice sounds flatter than expected, check whether it is one of the natural AI voices — English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese — or one of the iOS system voices used for the other 25+ languages. The system voices are noticeably more synthetic.
Names and unusual words are mispronounced
Invented names, transliterations and honorifics are frequently wrong, and there is no per-word pronunciation editor to correct them. It is a real limitation rather than a bug, and worth knowing before starting a long book full of them.
I have hit the daily limit
The free plan narrates 25,000 characters a day — about 4,000 words, roughly one chapter — and resets every day. There is also a 150,000 character lifetime pool that is only drawn on once you pass the daily limit, which is why some people get a longer first few days than they expect. Your current usage is shown in the app’s Settings screen. Plus ($4.99/month or $29.99/year) removes both limits.
Subscriptions, billing and refunds
Plus is an App Store subscription, so it is managed in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, and cancelling there stops it renewing. Refunds are handled by Apple rather than by us, at reportaproblem.apple.com. If a purchase does not appear after paying, use Restore Purchases in the app first, then email if it still does not show.
Requirements
Narrator requires iOS 26.0 or later, and runs on iPhone and iPad. There is no Mac application and no web version.
Privacy
Books are parsed on the device and narration runs there too; your library is not uploaded. The full privacy policy has the details.
